About Stockphoto.com

What’s a stock photo?

Stock photos are images used in websites, apps, brochures and other promotional materials.

They are usually generic in nature and can cover diverse subject areas.

For example, stock photos may include images from people, locations, flora, fauna to illustrations and art.

They are limited only by the imagination of the photographer.

For a small, one-off licensing fee to the photographer, you are granted usage rights for the selected image.

What do we do?

Stockphoto.com is an online image marketplace where photographers license stock photos to buyers for a one-time fee. Licensees (or purchasers) are then free to use the images within the usage agreement granted by the photographer.

For each photo that Stockphoto.com licenses, we pass this revenue on to the photographer (i.e. the owner of the image) and keep a small commission as our fee. The buyer downloads the ‘un-watermarked’ photo(s) immediately upon payment. Everyone’s happy.

Our story

When

Stockphoto.com launched in September 2013  as a part-time, self-funded, one-man band.

Why

It owes its existence to the founder’s knee-jerk reaction to his mid-life crisis. Worried that he had pissed away the best years of his professional life and never getting around to doing that web startup that he had pencilled in his Bucket List, he’s now parading his failings (and thinning hair) to people on the interweb. If you like watching slow-moving train wrecks, you can read more about it here.

Who

In February 2015, Jon Yau was joined by two amazing co-founders, Luke Evans and Lee Torrens.

Luke Evans

Luke is Stockphoto's Chief Technology Officer. He is in charge of all things shopfront-related (i.e. the website), including Search and Design.

Once a snooty design purist, he is now a data-driven designer and lets his website visitors do the talking.

Lee Torrens

Lee is stock photography’s top blogger and brings on-board a wealth of industry experience. More recently, he’s also worked on the really cool ‘Canva.com’.

He is Stockphoto.com’s photographer advocate and spends his time stocking the shelves :)
